Frequently Asked Questions

Appointments and Session Structure

Standard counselling sessions typically run for 50 to 60 minutes, which is referred to in the industry as a "therapeutic hour”. Your first session with Life Matters Holistic Counselling may run for up to 90 minutes and every session thereafter is 50 to 60 minutes.

If you decide to cancel or need to reschedule an appointment, please provide 24 hours notice. Cancelling or rescheduling sessions within this time frame usually results in a cancellation fee. I prefer not to charge missed session fees and so appreciate your understanding in this matter.

The number of sessions required varies for different folks according to personal circumstances and therapeutic goals. Beginning with three (3) sessions is the recommended starting point and beyond this we will regularly review your progress.

What to Expect

The first visit is a relaxed conversation and an opportunity for both of us to decide if I am the right counsellor for you. Our initial chat will centre around what brings you to counselling, gathering a little relevant personal history, offering you some information, and helping you to clarify your personal goals.

Yes, this is a fully confidential counselling service. The only exceptions are that, as a counsellor, I have a professional duty of care to you which means I must disclose information if I believe you are at risk of harming yourself or another person, and I am legally required to provide information if requested for a court of law.

While both counselling and psychotherapy are forms of talk therapy that help you improve your mental wellbeing, they differ in their focus, depth, and the types of issues that they address. For more information on the differences, we have an article available here.

Holistic Counselling and Transpersonal Therapy

Holistic counselling is a form of therapy that treats the whole person, mind, body, and spirit, rather than just focusing on a single issue or aspect. Traditional talk therapy typically targets thoughts and behaviours. In contrast, a holistic approach looks at how your physical health, emotions, relationships, environment and spiritual beliefs all interconnect to affect how you feel and function.

Counselling is a process that requires both a high level of commitment and your active participation. It should also, however, always only proceed at a pace that is comfortable for and set by you. In session we will engage in conversation, exploration and reflection. Whether focusing on current or past experiences, you will be supported to clarify your challenges and develop workable, life-affirming solutions. You will regularly be invited (during and between sessions) to engage in creative expression and experiential exercises. These are designed to assist you to consolidate your personal insights and growth.
